The Visitors Services Specialist administers the day-to-day Pilgrimage and Visitor Services (PVS) operations of the Saint John Paul II Shrine. This position includes leading pilgrimages consisting of interpreting sacred art tours to both the general public and privately scheduled groups, exploring the permanent and temporary exhibits, attending liturgical events such as Mass, and providing excellent customer service. The position also assists with scheduling duties, including contacting groups before visits to confirm upcoming attendance and after visits to survey about the visitor experience. The schedule for this position requires regular weekend hours with occasional evenings and holidays in rotation with other department team members.

Core Responsibilities

  • Performs docent-type duties such as leading sacred art tours and guiding groups through the permanent and temporary exhibits. Managing on-site support for groups during their visit and ensures that approved resources are provided.
  • Manages weekend, holiday, and special evening operations of the Shrine to ensure the Shrine is open and ready to receive visitors every day.
  • Reviews and screens requests for pilgrimages, group tours, school trips, etc. as well as internal and external special events; determines availability of requested dates, times and resources; collaborates, as necessary, with Shrine staff to establish a mutually agreeable itinerary and to provide logistical support for events; responsibilities generally includes assessing needs and providing excellent customer service to tour/event organizers.
  • Performs duties in support of specialized projects tailored to the visitor interests/skills.


Skills Qualifications


  • Experience working with diverse groups of people and providing exceptional customer service in a highly professional environment
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including public speaking in a docent or tour guide capacity
  • Creativity and attention to detail
  • Basic knowledge of the Washington, DC area, local attractions (especially complementary religious sites), Metro, and general driving directions for Washington, DC.
  • Knowledge of the life and legacy of Saint John Paul II required
  • Knowledge and understanding of Catholic Church protocol and Knights of Columbus protocol required
  • Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Interactive web-based systems that enhance the visitor experience (such as direct-response programs/websites) Preferred:
  • Ability to communicate in Spanish, French, Italian, Polish or other languages a plus


  • BA or BS degree
  • 3-5 years of related experience or equivalent combination of training and experience

Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a stationary position for a majority of the workday.
Position involves sitting, although frequent movement is necessary
